About Ro Cham Beau

Detroit Has Always Had Soul. Now It Has a Room Built to Listen.

Some cities have jazz. Detroit is jazz — a city that gave the world Motown, nurtured generations of musicians, and built a soundtrack that still echoes around the globe. Ro Cham Beau was created to honor that legacy with a space worthy of it.

We are Detroit’s intimate jazz listening room — a place where the music isn’t background, it’s the whole point.

The Room

Tucked inside an historic 1890s building on Michigan Avenue, our entrance is purposefully understated. No screaming signage, no billboard, no fanfare. Just a door, and on the other side, one of the most carefully considered listening spaces in the city. If you know, you know.

Inside, 70 seats surround a stage in a room praised by audiences for its great acoustics — exposed brick walls, hardwood and concrete floors, and a mid-century vibe that feels warm, unhurried, and alive. We programmed every detail from the perspective of someone sitting in the audience, because that’s exactly who we are.

This was not designed by architects or shaped by consultants. We built the room in which we always wanted to sit.

The Experience

This is not a jazz bar. This is a listening room with walk up bar service. When the music starts at Ro Cham Beau, the room listens — and you’ll hear things you simply cannot hear anywhere else.

Our format is simple and intentional. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Two sets of approximately 35-minutes each, with a 25-minute intermission to stretch, refresh your drink, and talk to the person next to you about what you just heard. The bar stays open an hour after the final note fades. Come early. Stay late.

We feature world-class jazz artists across the full spectrum of the genre — straight-ahead, Latin jazz, vocal jazz, contemporary, and beyond. Whether you’re a lifelong jazz devotee or discovering the music for the first time, you will feel at home here.

The People

Ro Cham Beau is family owned and operated — built by musicians and curated by musicians. On any given night you’ll find Mom, Dad and Ari behind the bar, greeting guests, pouring drinks, and hanging with the artists. When Ari is not behind the bar or on stage performing, you’ll find him up in the booth running sound and lights.

This isn’t a venue that happens to be family owned. This family is the venue.
